Psalm 46 Adapted for Today

There is much turmoil in the world today, but we do not have to be part of it. We can find rest in the midst of the storm. The kingdom of God is righteousness, peace, and joy, not slander and chaos. We can run in to Him for the peace that our soul longs for.

As my heart aches over the direction of our nation and I’m dragged down by the political battle, the Lord keeps calling me up, and drawing me to Himself to refresh my soul.

One verse has been a consistent theme, as He draws me back to His refreshing streams. God says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” (Ps. 46:10).

As He draws me, He reminds me that He is Lord of all, and His sovereignty will not be affected by all the evil around us.

Recently, I looked at the rest of the Psalm. I hope it refreshes you as it did me. It is quoted below, but I changed the words a bit in 2b-3. The words in italics are my words. Instead of talking about the earth, mountains, and waters being removed, thrown in the sea and roaring, I spoke of upheaval that threatens to rob our peace. Except for the italics, the verses below are quoted from the New King James.

God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.                      2 Therefore we will not fear,

(The following lines in italics are adapted to mirror the turmoil of our day.)

Even though the earth be turned upside down, And though the morals of the people slide into the sea; 3 Though its politicians roar and the people be troubled, Though the masses shake with horror and fear.

But in the midst of the turmoil, God said:

4 There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God, The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High.

5 God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved; God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.

6 The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved; He uttered His voice, the earth melted.

7 The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

8 Come, behold the works of the LORD, Who has made desolations in the earth.

9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariot in the fire.

10 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!

11 The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

Lord, we are in trouble. Help us to run to You, to be still, and to know that you are with us. Help us not fear, but to take refuge in You, and find peace and rest in You. May we behold Your mighty hand at work and may Your kingdom be established across the land.
