God Knows Where the Bathroom Is

In the middle of the night Friday night, I blurted out, “Robert, I don’t know where the bathroom is!”

In my dream, I was in a large, gracious guest room of a beautiful home. I had just laid my head on the pillow and realized I didn’t know where the bathroom was. My frantic outcry came from concern that I might need to get up and would have to stumble around in the dark of the night to find the bathroom.

The dream came after I shared with close friends that I was feeling unsettled and distant from God.

I felt unsettled because we’re in transition (retiring, down-sizing, selling house, and moving to another state) with numerous unanswered questions concerning our plans. Many, if not most, of those decisions can’t be answered until after the house sells. Time is moving forward, but it seems we are on hold, waiting.

God is faithful, is with us, and will never leave us. In His time, it will all work out. So why am I unsettled? Why does He feel distant, even while proving Himself faithful?

He showed me why. Through the dream, God said, “I know where the bathroom is.”

He’s got this. He knows my limitations and He’ll get me to the bathroom when it’s time. I can rest in Him.

I’m unsettled because I’m rest-less. I’m not resting in Him. Instead, I keep looking for the “bathroom,” for answers that are not available yet.

His promises to us are much bigger than getting to the bathroom. Even in a strange place. Even in the middle of the night.  He knows where it is. He’s even bigger than the uncertainty and decisions that go with a transition.

My outburst woke me up enough that I quickly realized where I was. Almost immediately, I said, “Oh, we’re home,” and went right back to sleep.

Home. That’s the key. That’s were we find rest and peace.

At home in Jesus, rest is accompanied with peace and joy. Love and righteousness too, and so much more. “If ye abide in Me . . .”

Are you unsettled? Restless? Seeking answers where there are no answers? Check your “abiding” indicator. In Jesus, there is peace. He is the Prince of peace.

And He knows where the bathroom is.
