I’ll Never Read the Bible the Same Again
“I’ll never read the Bible the same again,” said Chris C. when he heard a teaching on the Abrahamic covenant and the ancient ritual behind it.
It’s true of me too. I could have said those words. Learning about the ancient ritual opened Robert’s and my eyes to understand things in the Word that had previously seemed mysterious.
Just this past week, a familiar passage exploded with new meaning because of our understanding of covenant. Did you know that when Micah (6:8) states what the Lord requires us to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God, that it is covenant talk? Understanding covenant, and recognizing that it is covenant talk, opens up a whole new meaning to the passage. It’s exciting, but I’ll pursue that at a later date.
We first learned about the ceremonial ritual in 1975. We’ve continued to research and study the covenant, its symbolism, how it relates to the Bible, and what it means for us today. Forty years later, we’re still seeing new things in God’s Word because of that knowledge.
Our faith has also deepened as we understand more clearly how a blood covenant is different from other pacts or agreements. Blood is a bit disgusting to many people, but God was very intentional when He instructed Abram to get three animals, cut them in a particular manner, and lay them opposite each other (Gen. 15:9-10).
Any other type of covenant would not be sufficient to paint a picture of the relationship God wants with us. Only a blood covenant contains the proper exchanges–seven of them, symbolism, and commitment.
We looked further in Scripture to see what impact covenant had in Abraham’s life, the lives of his children, of Israel, Moses, David, and more. The lives of individuals were directly affected by how well they understood and honored the covenant with their God.
Our Bible is divided into the Old Covenant (Testament) and New Covenant (Testament). Covenant is central to the Word, and thus to understanding it, and yet because we are no longer familiar with the ancient ritual, we miss important nuances in the words and the stories we read.
The Great Exchange: Bound by Blood has just been released sharing many things we have learned about the blood covenant and how it defines and affects our relationship with God.
Chris said, “I’ll never read the Bible the same again,” after hearing the teaching at a seminar. Many other people said the same.
Others who heard the teaching said they experienced God’s love more deeply, or that the knowledge of the ancient ritual and how it fits in the Bible strengthened their faith.
