Making Resolutions That Line Up with God’s Goals

What are your goals in 2014? Do you make New Year’s resolutions to help you achieve those goals?

I confess that I haven’t made many New Year’s resolutions over the years, but this year I’m challenged to set goals.

New Year’s resolutions generally focus around health (i.e. diet, exercise, quit smoking, and such), finances (i.e. get out of debt, save money), or relationships (i.e. volunteering, helping others). Nearly all of these deal with self improvement, making “my” life better in some way.

Self-discipline is good and these areas are worthy resolutions. However, how do they relate to what Jesus asked of us? He said, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” (Mt. 6:33).

Eating healthy, exercise, and getting out of debt are all important if we want to give our all to seeking God’s kingdom. But, the question is whether or not seeking God is even on our radar? Is it a goal we are conscious of?

Indeed, being closer to God will improve our lives more than anything else we can do, but do we make this a priority?

Have you ever made a New Year’s resolution to seek God more?

Or to love God more? The greatest commandment (Mt. 22:37) is to love Him with all our heart, mind, and strength. Shouldn’t it be a goal in our life to fulfill what God says is most important in life?

I’m passionate about building and maintaining healthy relationships with those around me and in helping others do the same, but I’ve learned that the real key to horizontal relationships is our relationship with God. It is through our relationship with God that we gain the grace to relate to each other.

This year, I’m challenged to make my relationship with God my focus as I consider what I want in the coming year.

How about you? Are you satisfied with how much you are seeking God? Do you love him with all your heart? Are these things obvious in your daily life and priorities? Are they listed with your goals and resolutions for 2014?

It’s so easy to be sidetracked by the demands and distractions of life. I want to do better in 2014. I hope you’ll join me in seeking God about how to be more purposeful in obeying Him.

What goals have you set to be more purposeful in seeking and loving God?
