Can We Have Peace Among Men?
“Glory to God in the highest and peace among men” Luke 2:14.
The words of the angel, spoken to the shepherds as they announced Jesus’ birth have become popular greetings on Christmas cards, in song, and in pageants.
But we tend to overlook the first half and focus on the second. We yearn for peace, but we don’t think much about giving glory to God. Instead, we’re concerned about our comfort and well-being.
We long for peace wherever it is missing—between nations, races, and political parties, in the workplace, and the home.
If “those people” (of whatever sphere) would straighten up and act sensibly, or if circumstances would change, finances improve, or health improve, then we could have peace.. The list goes on.
We think if things around us become peaceful, we will have peace.
But that wish is futile.
Until we find it within, peace is rare. The sense of the Hebrew word for peace refers to “welfare and health, ordinarily in the context of one’s relationship with God” (BibleWorks computer program).
Since the fall of Adam and Eve, the world has never been a place of peace. Nor will it be.
The only place we will find true peace is in Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. He is our Peace in the midst of pain, chaos, wars, conflict and strife.
Finding it is not so complicated.
If you want peace, focus on the first part of the greeting, “Glory to God in the highest!”
Become intimately acquainted with the glory of the Almighty God. Touch just a little of His splendor and majesty. Grasp a sense that One of such glory loves you—with perfect love.
When you know that, you have a peace that passes understanding—and an overflowing joy.
The secret is to seek Jesus, not to seek the peace that He gives.
Focus on “Glory to God in the highest,” then, you will find peace and through you He will be glorified.
