Hope in the Midst of Atrocity

The massacre in Colorado has dominated the news and my thoughts. I question what could motivate such atrocity. How could somebody perpetrate such violence? I speculate about how long anger must have boiled beneath the surface before James Holmes erupted in such unbelievable carnage.

Next, I wonder how many other people are seething beneath the surface while putting on a “normal” front.

Then, I question why we’re surprised.

We know the earth is a battlefield between good and evil. It doesn’t take a historian to know that man has committed atrocities against man as long as history has been recorded. During the Roman Empire, it became the norm. They made a sport out of it. Spectators gathered in the arena and cheered the brutality as men were forced to face lions.

The Romans also tortured innocent people and hung them on the cross to die.

We shouldn’t be surprised by today’s events.

God isn’t. He knows we have an evil enemy who is fighting to rule the earth. Furthermore, He understands the depravity of man.

Because of our depravity, God sent His Son. He is our rock and salvation in the midst of evil and uncertainty.

He is our guide, strength, and comfort when life doesn’t make sense. Our fortress and shield in times of trouble.

If we run to Him, we can hide under His wings. In that safe place, we can find love, peace and hope to sustain us.

Jesus promised that He will never leave us or forsake us.

If we draw our life from Him, we will carry that life—that strength, peace, and hope—to those around us who have no Source of life.
