The Hearing Heart Seminar
But let everyone be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger. Jas 1:19
Time: Minimum of 10 hours for the entire seminar.
Goal: To give the participants a Biblical understanding and basic skills/tools to develop the art of listening so they will have a heart that hears with wisdom and understanding.
The content of this seminar can be adapted to be used at a couples’ retreat or a family camp.
Session 1: Introduction and Biblical Foundation
Through the story of Solomon in 1 Kings 3:9ff we learn what it means to have a hearing heart, and why we all need to hear and to be heard.
Session 2: Hearing God
Hearing God is foundation to the biblical art of listening. A hearing heart seeks to apply God’s truth to life. In order to do that, we must hear from God as well as listening to others.
Session 3: Hearing One’s Self
When we can learn to hear our own heart and soul, we can better hear others. We will examine tone of voice in an effort to give a practical tool for hearing ourselves. (+ skit and exercise)
Session 4: Hearing the Heart of Others
We offer specific, practical lessons on how to hear others, including discussing the levels of communication and the use of “What” questions to help lead others to God’s truth in a caring, purposeful way. (+ exercise)
Session 5: Scenario Demonstration
The teaching is applied through a live demonstration of a hearing heart using a real scenario from life. The goal will be to help us all see the power of listening to the heart of another. It will be followed by debriefing and questions.
Session 6: Practice in Hearing
The teaching is practiced as the participants act as a collective counselor in a scenario from life. It will be followed by debriefing and questions.
